Analyzing, understanding and describing the experiences of the relatives of critical patients in the intensive care unit was the object of this qualitative research, with a phenomenological approach. The setting was the EsSalud III-Chimbote Hospital during 2023. 10 family members were interviewed using the in-depth open interview technique and a questionnaire as an instrument. The speeches were classified into six units of meaning: negative feelings about the situation, living the reality of having a patient in the ICU, shock and processing of the situation, changes in family adaptation, hope and vision of the situation, uncertainty and emotional burden. . . The results revealed emotions such as anguish, sadness, worry and nostalgia, due to the serious health condition of the patients and the uncertainty about their recovery. Despite the difficulties, family members expressed a deep desire to see their loved ones recovered and back home, positively valuing the specialized care in the ICU. However, they recognized the overwhelming impact of hospitalization on their lives and family dynamics. The hope of a full recovery and returning to enjoying life with loved ones was a unifying force among participating families
