Results of a research carried out in the Peruvian Amazon about changes in the exploited fish species are described. The hypothesis used are that these changes are consequence of the retraction and expansion of the Amazon river waters, and other climate factors such as temperature and rain. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of the changes of these variables on the fish species composition on the fish landings in Iquitos. Fish landings were analyzed to determine changes in the qualitative and quantitative composition, and then a correlation test was made with water level, temperature and precipitation (rain). The studied variables showed cyclic and temporal alterations, with periods in between apparently normal. The study concludes in that retraction and expansion of waters reduce and rise the habitats number, and as a consequence the increase and reduction of species. Moreover, reduction of large size and slow growing species is evident, in favor of species with fast growing and high fecundity.
