The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of using learning portfolios to improve first year Social Science students’ learning of the Peruvian Amazon history at the National University of the Peruvian Amazon, Iquitos 2019. The research type was evaluative and the designs were field study, contemporary transectional, univariable, and experimental with control group, pre-test and post-test. The study population was made up by 162 students with a sample of 33 divided randomly into two groups: 17 of the experimental group and 16 of the control group. The main data gathering tool was a valid and reliable performance test. Results show that the post test mean score of the experimental group was higher than the control group (11,82 > 5,75) in a 0-20 scale. Simlarly, the dimension results were: Autonomy period (12,16 > 6,25), dependence period (11,43 > 6,25) y republican period (11,93 > 4,82).
