The study was conducted in the ambit of the province of Maynas, Loreto, Peru, in order to assess the relationship between logging in local forests and their relationship to sustainable development of the province of Maynas at 2015, as well as to determine the volume extracted in the mode of local forests, to understand the behaviour of loggers in relation to the sustainability of forests and to identify local sustainability strategies. Data collection was carried out by using structured interviews directed to managers and workers of local forests authorizations in the province of Maynas. The results show that local forests increased only 4,2% the average volume of logs in the period 2004 to 2012; the year with the highest number of authorizations was 2007 with 34 and the maximum log production was in 2012 with 3495,79 m3. It is necessary that the Ministry of Agriculture to consider improving or eliminating local forests as logging mode since this mode little contributes to the sustained development of the sector under the framework of a new law. The National University of the Peruvian Amazon must assume its role by issuing technical opinions regarding the rules and laws governing the forestry sector.
