The purpose of this research was to establish the level of influence of the graduated readings on the academic performance of the students of the Didactic Subject of English Teaching I of the Enrique Guzmán y Valle National University of Education. The research had a quantitative approach: the experimental method was used with the quasi experimental design. The sample consisted of 34 students enrolled in the fifth cycle of the Department of Foreign Languages; the sample was distributed in a control group and an experimental group. The data collection instrument used was the 'Test to measure academic performance', which consisted of 20 items with closed-ended and multiple choice questions and a single answer. For the test of the formulated hypothesis, Mann Whitney's non-parametric statistic U and the descriptive analysis were used, which involve the analysis of the results in the test and post-test. The results showed a significant improvement in the post-test since after the application of the graduated readings (post test) highly significant differences are observed (z = -3,111, p < 0.01) in favor of the experimental group, due to the fact that the average range of the experimental group (21,30) was greater than that of the control group (10,54). Therefore, it is concluded that the hypothesis of the graduated readings significantly influences the academic performance of students of the Didactic Subject of English Teaching I, is true.
