Social media has become a way of structuring the way we relate to others, becoming a way of being with others. Nowadays, teenagers live immersed into a digital world, where the proliferation of messages that show models of unattainable thinness and rigid standards of beauty is increasing (Saul & Rodgers, 2018), and this would contribute to the development of dissatisfaction with one's own body, favoring the risk of developing an eating disorder (ED) (Ahern et al., 2011). This type of mental illness is characterized by a disordered behavior related to eating (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2014), and these disorders are considered as a public health problem due to the significant deterioration consequences in physical and mental health, specifically in young people (González et al., 2007). To face this, the general objective of this documentary study is to analyze the use of social media and the development of EDs in adolescents through the review of empirical research carried out between 2013 and 2023. In response to the specific objectives of the research, it aims to conceptually delimit the meaning and implication of EDs, as well as to identify the main models of evaluation, intervention and prevention of EDs. Finally, as a conclusion, an integrated synthesis regarding the review carried out is presented, and some recommendations are given in order to allow future research to delve into this important topic and carry out more prevention programs in this area.
