Objective: To evaluate the changes in condylar position (CP) and articular spaces (JS) after rapid maxillary expansion (RME) using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). Methods: 72 CBCT pre (T0) and post (T1) disjunction of patients between 8 to 17 years old who were treated with tooth-supported Hyrax were evaluated. The time period between T1 and T0 was approximately 10.11 months. The CBCTs were converted to DICOM format, and the multiplanar (MPR) images were analyzed using a 3D processing software and 3D-specific reference points and planes. Changes in CP were recorded using angular and linear measurements (anteroposterior, midsagittal and vertical); and also the changes in anterior, superior, posterior and medial JS. In addition, sex and type of bite were analyzed. Results: The CP showed a statistically significant linear displacement, inferior and lateral, after RME. In boys, a significant posterior linear displacement was found. However, the JS did not present statistically significant changes. Conclusions: RME produces a displacement of the CP downwards and to the sides. When evaluated by sex, there was a backward condylar displacement in the males. There were no significant changes in JS.
