Objective: To evaluate the association between change in food planning and purchasing behavior, and sex in times of confinement by COVID-19 in Peruvian adults. Methods: Cross-sectional, observational and analytical study, with a sample of 589. For the characteristics of the population, descriptive statistics are used and for the association of the variables the Chi square or Ficher’s Exact test is used with a significance level of p<0.05. Results: A total of 447 women and 142 men participated. During confinement, a significant increase (p<0.001) was found in food purchasing planning and in all its dimensions. According to sex, women increased more than men in making a shopping list (p=0.003) and in planning meals with a variety of foods (p=0.071). Regarding the purchase of food, significant associations were found (p<0.001) in all dimensions, in the purchasing modality there was an increase in online purchases and a reduction in physical purchases; while at the point of purchase, an increase in purchase was observed in wineries and specialized stores, and a reduction in supermarkets, organic stores and farmers’ markets. According to sex, men had a greater increase in the frequency of physically going to buy food (p=0.026) and buying in organic stores or fairs (p=0.004). Regarding food sourcing, in women, and increase in milk (p=0.006), other dairy products (p=0.042), vegetable beverages (p=0.020) and legumes (p=0.010) was observed. Conclusions: During confinement, food purchasing planning behavior improved; physical purchases, in supermarkets, organic stores and farmer’s markets decreased and online purchases, in wineries and specialized stores increased. According to sex, it was men who increased their purchases the most, essentially and in organic stores or fairs; while women increased the fact of making a shopping list, the supply of dairy products, vegetable dinks and legume.
