Poverty is a state in which a person suffers from the absence of their basic needs; by 2022 in Peru, 25.9% of citizens were in this condition (12). There is evidence of a close link between a person's socioeconomic level (SES) and the predisposition to suffer from food insecurity, a second situation that affects 16 million Peruvians (FAO, 2023). For this reason, the WHO and UNICEF explain that most forms of poor nutritional status have their origin in the lowest SES (poverty), thus multiplying the risk of malnutrition. Under these considerations, the present study sought to evaluate whether there is any association between SES and nutritional status in a vulnerable and understudied population such as adolescents, under an observational, analytical cross-sectional study, and a census sampling (in an equitable sample of both men 50.5%, and women 49.5%) in a state school in the province of San Martín. Finding that the highest population density with respect to SES belonged to SES B (medium) (50.5%), followed in descending order by SES A (high) (25.7%) and SES E (low) (23.8%), in addition, regarding the prevalence of malnutrition, this was 34.7%. Finally, the results of the study did not indicate a statistically significant association between the SES of adolescents and their nutritional status; that is, these variables may be influenced by other factors.
