Background: Nosocomial infections are transmitted through the hands of hospital workers, which is why practicing the five periods for hand washing proposed by the World Health Organization is vital when performing any procedure that involves contact with patients or their environment. However, studies have been found that show significant percentages of health workers who do not have adequate knowledge of the times when hand hygiene should be performed, and similar results have been found in students of health-related careers. Objective: To describe the degree of knowledge of the five periods for hand washing in students of the fourth and fifth year of medical studies in a Peruvian university, during the month of November - 2020. Materials and Methods: The type of study is observational, descriptive and transversal. The method of data collection was by means of a virtual survey, constructed for this study. Results: The students of the technical school reported a high knowledge of hand hygiene with 48.7%. Conclusion: The degree of knowledge of students about the 5 moments for hand hygiene was high in fourth and fifth year undergraduate students of Medical Technology careers in a Peruvian university.
