Nearly 7 million people die prematurely annually due to air pollutants such as particulate matter <2.5 microns (PM₂.₅). Exposure to PM₂.₅ is a risk factor for developing respiratory diseases since it can accumulate in the alveoli, promote inflammatory processes and affect the host´s immune system. Altogether in increases suceptibility to future infections. In Perú, 35.8 deaths from penumonia were recorded per 100,000 inhabitans during 2021. In Lima, a posistive association between short-term exposure to PM₂.₅ and respiratory diseases in children is reported, however, it has not yet been evaluated the impact of long-term exposure. The objetive of this study was to determine the association between chronic and acuta exposure to PM₂.₅ and emergency visits for pneumonia in children under 5 years of age residing in 10 districts of Metropolitan Lima during 2019 using a generalized linear model of the family negative binomial adjusted for temperature, humidity, day of the week, month, district and population, with an ecological time series desing. Acute exposure to PM₂.₅ is not associated with an increase in pneumonia emergencies and it is observed that exposure for 90 days to concentrations between 29.16 μg/m3 and 38.8 μg/m3 increased the number of pneumonia emergencies by 68%. Furthemore, the weekly average of PM₂.₅ is associated wirh an increase in weekly emergencies due to pneumonia in 1-year-old children (IRR: 1.039,95% CI: 1.004-1.074) and during the autumm season (IRR: 1.048 95% CI) : 1.011-1.087) and winter ((IRR: 1.045 95% CI: 1.020-1.071) Therefore, PM₂.₅ and pneumonia emergencies are associated when there is a 90- day chronic exposure and with the weekly average of PM₂.₅.
