Objective: To describe the sociodemographic and clinical profile of patients under 18 years of age hospitalized in the emergency department of the National Institute of Mental Health “Honorio Delgado – Hideyo Noguchi”. Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study. The records of all patients under 18 years of age hospitalized in the emergency department in 2018 were reviewed. Results: Of 130 patients studied, 95.4% were 12 years of age or older and there was a similar distribution between sexes. The most frequent reasons for admission were agitation/aggression, suicidal ideation/attempt, and use of psychoactive substances. 23,8% had a suicide attempt in the current episode, 33,8% consumed one or more psychoactive substances and 38% had a history of violence, where the aggressor was known in 100% of the patients with physical and psychological violence and in 71% of sexual violence. The most frequent diagnoses were psychoactive substance use, depressive and behavior disorders. At discharge, an average of 3.0 psychotropic drugs were prescribed per patient, with 90% receiving antipsychotics, 52,3% mood stabilizers, and 43,9% antidepressants. The number of hospitalizations of children under 18 years of age in the emergency department 11 times from 2014 to 2018, but the percentage compared to the total hospitalized patients remained stable. Conclusions: The majority of patients were adolescents and were admitted for agitation/aggression, suicidal crisis and use of psychoactive substances. A high percentage of polypharmacy was found at discharge. There has been a constant increase in emergency hospitalization of patients under 18 years of age from 2014 to 2018.
