The study aimed to determine the perception of the residents of Ventanilla district regarding the benefits and applicability of the Law that prioritizes the sterilization of dogs and cats as a component of the national public health policy (Law N° 31311). An observational, descriptive study based on surveys conducted with adult residents, both pet owners and non-pet owners, from 4 human settlements was carried out. 400 valid surveys were collected, where 52.3% of respondents were aware of the law; and 7.8% stated that the law is implemented in their district. 54.5% of participants mentioned that the municipality has the funding to implement the law; and 46.5% indicated that it’s the municipality's responsibility to finance sterilizations under the framework of Law No. 31311. More than 50% of participants agree to sterilize their pets as a preventive measure against overpopulation, if the cost of sterilization is within their economic means. It’s concluded that the lack of information and limited participation of the population regarding responsible pet ownership would hinder the correct applicability of Law N° 31311 in Ventanilla district, Callao.
