Background: Toothbrushing with fluoride toothpaste has proven to be effective against early childhood caries. However, using an inappropriate amount of toothpaste is a risk factor for developing dental fluorosis. Objective: To evaluate the amount of toothpaste dispensed by mothers/caregivers of children up to 36 months old and describe the oral hygiene practices they have with their children. Materials and methods: We included 413 mothers/caregivers of children up to 36 months old who attended the national program of pediatric check-ups at San Bartolomé National Hospital. First, data about children's oral hygiene practices was collected using a questionnaire. Then, the amount of toothpaste dispensed on the children's toothbrush was weighed using a calibrated precision scale. Results: 55.9% of mothers/caregivers practiced some type of oral hygiene with their children while 48.2% used toothpaste. The most frequently dispensed amount of toothpaste reported by mothers/caregivers was half the length of the brush head. The average weight of the toothpaste dispensed was 0.47±0.18g, we found a significant difference with the established amount of 0.10g (p= 0.00001). Conclusion: Although there are guidelines on the use of toothpaste in children, mothers/caregivers dispense an excessive amount that is equivalent to more than four times the weight of what is recommended for children up to 36 months old.
