Objective. To compare the factors associated with the fertility preference of married or cohabiting women in Perú during 2016. Material and Methods. A secondary source study was carried out from the Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES) 2016. Fertility preference (time spacing to the next birth) as a dependent variable was recategorized into women who would wait a time < 3 years or ≥ 3 years for your next child. The independent variables were: age, marital status, place of residence, wealth index, current children, age at first child, level of education of the man and woman, employment status of the woman and man, contraceptive method and language. A descriptive analysis was carried out using absolute frequency and weighted proportions, both raw and adjusted logistic regression analysis. Results. In 2016, 52.37% of women regarding their fertility preference for the next child would wait a time greater than or equal to 3 years while 47.63% of women regarding their fertility preference for the next child would wait a time less than 3 years. Likewise, 73.3% of women are cohabitants and 26.7% are married. In the adjusted model, no difference was found between married and cohabiting women in fertility preference for the next child. However, the woman's age, currently having children, and having her first child at an age greater than or equal to 25 years are associated with the fertility preference for the next child being 3 years or older. Only in cohabiting women who work and with a medium and very high wealth index are factors associated with the fertility preference of the next child from the 3 years. Conclusions. In the multiple logistic regression analysis, no differences were found in the fertility preferences of the next child between married and cohabiting women. The sociocultural factors associated with fertility preference in married and cohabiting women were: the woman's age, current children, and age at her first child. The socioeconomic factors associated only in cohabitants were: the woman working and the medium and high wealth index.
