Introduction: Blood gasses are important for the evaluation of the patient's oxygenation status. Lack of knowledge and experience leads to preanalytical errors, which are the most frequent, at the time of sampling. In addition to this, the uncertainty generated by COVID-19 prompts us to seek strategies to protect the integrity of the personnel. By putting the guidelines into practice, it will help to avoid or reduce these errors and at the same time, taking care of the health personnel in order to avoid contagions. Objective: To describe the considerations executed to ensure adequate sampling for arterial gasses in patients with COVID-19 in a public hospital in the period from April to December 2020. Description of method: In the year 2020, with the onset of the pandemic, blood gasses, established as the reference test for patients with COVID-19 and acute respiratory failure, has emerged as a crucial tool for diagnosis and treatment. The scientific literature has shown that proper application of the guidelines can reduce or prevent preanalytical errors and personnel infections during blood gas sampling. Conclusions: The correct implementation of the guidelines and suggestions aimed at facilitating arterial gas sampling as well as the safety of healthcare personnel through PPE during the COVID-19 pandemic reduces the frequency of pre-analytical errors and the risk of contagion, thus contributing to improve the accuracy in the diagnosis and timely treatment of the patient.
