Anemia is a public health problem, so many countries recommend preventive iron supplementation in oral formulations in both anaemic and non-anaemic populations. The potential advantages of supplementation in healthy subjects are unclear. Objective: To evaluate the weight, morphology and histology of the liver and cecum, as well as blood glucose and haematocrit levels against different doses of orally administered sulphate in non-obese adult mice, as well as in obese adult mice. Methodology: Non-obese BALB-C strain male Mus musculus mice and a group subjected to obesity were used. The non-obese (n= 20) and obese (n=20) mice group consisted of the following subgroups. The mice (obese or non-obese) received 0, 1, 2, 4 and 5 mg Fe/kg for 30 days. Glucose and haematocrit were measured 0, 15 and 30 days after treatment. Weights and histology of the cecum and liver were performed at 30 days of treatment. Results: Body weight increased more in obese patients with higher doses of ferrous sulfate than in non-obese patients (p<0.05). The weight of the liver (p<0.05) and the cecum as a marker of morphology was higher in the obese group than in the non-obese group. Liver showed greater histological alterations in obese mice than in non-obese mice. Cecum showed greater histological alterations in obese mice compared to non-obese mice. Blood glucose levels versus different doses of sulfate administered orally were higher in obese mice than in non-obese mice (p<0.05). Hematocrit levels were increased in the obese group compared to the non-obese group (p<0.05). The minimum dose from which mouse and organ weight is altered at the end of Ferrous Sulfate treatment in non-obese mice was 5 mg Fe/kg and in obese males was 2 mg Fe/kg body weight. The minimum dose from which blood glucose is altered at the end of treatment with ferrous sulfate in controls was 5 mg Fe/kg and in obese males it was 2 mg Fe/kg. Conclusions: Doses of 4 and 5 mg Fe/kg produced alterations in morphology, weight, liver and cecum histology, and blood glucose and hematocrit levels in a higher proportion in obese mice than in non-obese controls.
