Background: Aging generally causes a deterioration in physical and mental capacity. Physical activity is any bodily movement that produces energy expenditure, and promotes neuroplasticity, which is responsible for preserving and restoring changes in brain function as a result of aging, slowing the deterioration of cognitive status and improving quality of life. Objective: To determine the relationship between the level of physical activity and cognitive status in older adults in a senior center. Materials and methods: Observational and analytical cross-sectional study. The instruments used were the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire for Physical Activity Level and the Mini-Mental State Examination test for Cognitive Status, which was the dependent variable. The sample consisted of 60 participants from the Senior Citizen Center of San Vicente de Cañete, Lima, Peru. The data collected were analyzed in Stata version 15. Results: The average age was 74.7 ± 7.3 years, and 95% of the participants were female. The 51.7% presented moderate level of physical activity of which 66.7% did not present cognitive impairment. A relationship was found between Cognitive Status and Physical Activity (p=0.027) and with educational level (p=0.02). Conclusions: There is a significant relationship between the level of physical activity and cognitive status in older adults in a senior center.
