Artisanal fishing is a crucial economic activity along the Ecuadorian coastline, providing the livelihood for many families in the region. This work is characterized by being carried out in small vessels, utilizing manual methods, and on a small scale. However, artisanal fishermen face extremely challenging working conditions, exposing them to various diseases, with musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) being a notable concern. These MSDs are primarily the result of intense physical effort and exposure to adverse weather conditions. Unfortunately, the working conditions and health of informal fishermen in Manta have received insufficient attention. To address this issue, a descriptive, analytical, and cross-sectional study was conducted, involving 332 informal artisanal fishermen in Manta, Ecuador. Two data collection instruments were employed: the Survey of Occupational Safety and Health Conditions (IECSST) and the Cornell Musculoskeletal Discomfort Questionnaires (CMDQ) to assess MSD symptoms. The most significant findings of the study revealed that 53.3% of the investigated population suffered from MSDs, with the upper back region (41.3%) and lower back region (32.2%) being the most affected, followed by the neck region (14.5%). These results underscore the urgent need to implement ergonomic evaluation programs, training in good labor practices, and workplace safety measures for informal fishermen in Manta. Furthermore, it is essential to establish rehabilitation programs and appropriate medical care for those suffering from MSDs. This research highlights the importance of improving working conditions and the health of informal artisanal fishermen in Manta, not only in terms of human well-being but also in supporting an essential economic activity in the region.
