Superficial mycoses are one of the most important dermopathies both in small animal medicine, due to their unfavorable clinical presentation, and in public health, due to their zoonotic potential. In this context, the present study aimed to determine the frequency and type of fungi isolated from dogs and cats suspected of superficial mycoses from fungal culture reports from a veterinary laboratory in the city of Metropolitan Lima in the period 2019 - 2022. A total of 7256 fungal culture reports were analyzed, in addition to data such as animal species, age, sex, breed, type of clinical specimen and season of the year, which were summarized in frequency tables and graphs. Likewise, the presence or absence of association between dependent and independent variables was determined using the Chi-square test. Fungal culture was positive in 64.36% (4670/7256) of the reports analyzed. The main fungal agents isolated were Malassezia with 45.88% (2270/4948), Cladosporium with 14.51% (718/4948) and Microsporum with 11.38% (563/4948). It was also found that in 5.85% (273/4670) of positive clinical samples more than one fungal species was reported, with Malassezia and Penicillium being the most frequently reported fungi simultaneously. Yeast infections (Candida and Malassezia) were more frequent in canines and dermatophytosis (Microsporum, Trichophyton and Epidermophyton) in felines. The existence of a significant association between the type of fungus and the species, breed, age, clinical specimen and season of the year was demonstrated. The results obtained could be useful as diagnostic orientation for the clinical veterinarian and to contribute to the surveillance of superficial mycoses in small animals, in addition to those that could be of public health importance.
