The aim of this study was to perform an operative behavioral intervention to reduce self-injurious behaviors (hitting the head, hitting the elbows and biting the forearm) in a 6-year-old girl diagnosed with autism. Information was collected through an interview, a topographic analysis and a functional analysis of the behavior; in addition, to perform the monitoring of the behaviors its frequency, duration and intensity was recorded. A behavioral methodology of operative type was used that focused on modifying behavioral patterns to reduce self-harming behaviors. The intervention consisted of 20 sessions of 45 minutes each, in which operative techniques such as the reinforcement of incompatible behavior (RDI) and physical restriction were applied to reduce the behavior of hitting the head and biting the forearm; as well as the incompatible behavior reinforcement (RDI) technique to reduce elbow beating behavior. The results showed a decrease of 88.8% on average, specifically, in the behavior of hitting the head of 83.3%, in the behavior of hitting the elbows of 88.8% and 100% in the behavior of biting the forearm. As a result, it was possible to reduce self-harming behaviors after behavioral intervention in a satisfactory manner, this was achieved after 20 sessions and with the application of the techniques of reinforcing differences in incompatible behavior (RDI) and physical restriction, as the achievement indicators set at the beginning of the intervention were achieved.
