Introduction: Hyperactivityof the renin angiotensin system (RAS) in the brain is associated with the development of depression. Consequently, it is suggested that antihypertensive drugs that act by inhibiting RAS might have antidepressant properties. The objective was to explore whether the use of RAS antihypertensive drugs, compared to other drugs, is associated with antidepressant activity in a Peruvian cohort with hypertension. Methodology: Prospective cohort study. The study population were individuals with hypertension. The independent variable was the use of RAS as antihypertensive treatment. The dependent variable was the change in the score of the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), from the start of treatment to 30 months later. We used multiple linear regression with robust variance to test the association between the two variables. Results: A sample of 520 people with a diagnosis of high blood pressure was worked on. 52.9% were male, and the average age was 56,7± 11.8 years. The average CES-D score was 14,1 ± 8,8. The CES-D score at 30 months was on average 0,0 ± 9,3 points less than that of the baseline CES-D questionnaire. Those who took BRA had a decrease of 2,9 points on average on the CES-D questionnaire during follow-up, this decrease was greater than among those taking no antihypertensives (increased 0,6 points) and those taking others (decreased only 0,2 points) (p=0,073). Conclusion: We found evidence that, in the Peruvian population, as in other cohorts worldwide, the use of BRA could reduce the depression scale score and, therefore, have a protective effect against this condition in hypertensive patients.
