The control of canine population growth represents an indispensable role in the prevention of zoonotic diseases and, therefore, human health. Hence, the aim of the study was to determine the canine population at the national level based on the results of the National Survey of Budgetary Programs (ENAPRES) during the year 2021 and the information from the National Population and Housing Census 2017 and its projections to 2021 developed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI). The classification variable considered was: departments of Peru, and the measurement variables were: households with dog ownership, number of dogs per household, human population per department; in order to obtain an average value of dogs per department and the general indicator person: dog. The department with the highest number of dogs was Lima (2585332) in contrast to the Madre de Dios, which had the lowest number of dogs according to those surveyed (54740). The person: dog ratio was 2.12:1 in the department of Moquegua whereas in the Loreto region was reported 5.71:1. It is expected that the results obtained from this research will facilitate the entities to calculate the necessary resources for the implementation of effective responsible dog ownership programs, and also favor the adequate planning of anti-rabies vaccination campaigns.
