Context: Ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP), bacteremia and urinary tract infection (UTI) are the most common secondary bacterial infections in hospitalized patients in critical care. In severe and critical COVID-19 patients there are associated factors that make them more prone to develop superinfections, such as age, comorbidities, previous exposure to antibiotics/corticoids and use of invasive devices like mechanical ventilation. These health care-associated infections are mostly caused by multi-resistant microorganisms. Materials and methods: Observational retrospective descriptive study. Results: 155 patients were included in this study, 100% had secondary bacterial infections and the mortality rate was 80%. 100% of the patients had at least one positive culture and VAP was identified as the most frequent secondary bacterial infection with 81% positive endotracheal cultures, being Acinetobacter baumannii MDR the most common bacteria found; the 68% of patients had positive blood cultures, identifying Staphylococcus haemolyticus as the most common bacteria; 19% had positive urinary cultures and Escherichia coli ESBL was the most frequent bacteria found. 10% of the patients had positive cultures for all three. Conclusion: Secondary bacterial infections and mortality were highly frequent in COVID- 19 patients with mechanical ventilation.
