Background: In 2019, the UN reported that 40% of primary care experiences damage as a result of preventable medical errors and 134 million people annually suffer damage related to a lack of security in medical care in low- and middle-income countries, which results in 2.6 million deaths per year. Objectives: Evaluate the knowledge, attitudes and perception about patient safety and medical errors in medical graduates from a private university. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study. It was determined to survey 91 graduates considering 80% statistical power and 95% confidence interval. A validated questionnaire was carried out using the Google Forms platform during the month of October 2023. Results: 102 surveys were obtained. Medical graduates achieved a higher score in the Error Awareness component (58.82%). Graduates who rotated in a private location had greater Openness in communication (P=0.0122), a proactive attitude to avoid risks (P=0.0061) and understanding of human factor (P=0.0020). Graduates who previously heard the concept of safety were more aware of errors (P=0.0178). 17.65% of the students passed the knowledge exam, only 5 participants answered all the questions correctly. Conclusion: It is pertinent to develop undergraduate academic strategies that strengthen skills to avoid the nature of medical errors, how to prevent them and deal with them in order to offer safer patient care.
