Background In recent years the antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella spp. has been increasing worldwide including in Peru. This has become a challenge regard the antibiotic treatment of salmonellosis. Objectives To describe the most frequent serotypes of Salmonella spp. and the antimicrobial susceptibility of 12 antibiotics in hospitals in Peru and to determine the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of cases of salmonellosis in these hospitals. Methods A database from the mainstudy “VIRAPERU” which contained microbiologic and clinical-epidemiological information of cases infected with Salmonella spp. carried out in 15 peruvian hospitals between 2017-2019 was filtered, organized and interpreted. Then the distribution, resistance patterns, and clinical-epidemiological characteristics per serotype were established. Results Of the 46 samples that were analyzed, the most frequent isolate in Lima and other regions of Perú was S. Infantis (39.1%). S. Infantis and S. Typhimurium possessed the highest percentage of antibiotic resistance. Ciprofloxacin showed a low antibiotic resistance rate with 11%, however, 70% showed intermediate susceptibility or resistance. Meropenem was the only antibiotic with 100% susceptibility. The infection with Salmonella spp. was mainly acquired in the community (75%). The frequency of bacteremia was 54%. 57% of the cases suffered from different comorbidities but only one death was reported. Conclusions The increase of S. Infantis in Peru is confirmed. This serotype was the most frequent isolate and showed the highest antimicrobial resistance rate.
