The objective of the study was to describe the knowledge and practices related to exposure to zoonosis and biting accidents among secondary school students of public and private schools in the district of Andahuaylas, Apurimac, Peru in 2022. An observational, cross-sectional and descriptive study was carried out. A survey was applied to collect information on animal ownership home, knowledge of the term zoonosis, and practices related to the transmission of zoonotic diseases and biting accidents. The survey was conducted among fourth and fifth year students from five high schools. 1221 surveys were collected and a ratio of 1 dog for every 3.75 people and 1 cat for every 4.27 people was found. The primary use for both dogs and cats was as companions. 68.9% and 65% of respondents stated that they had at least one dog and one cat, respectively. Regarding livestock, 42.7% indicated that they raised some animal. Of those surveyed, 83.4% were unaware of the term "zoonosis", but 73.3% indicated that they were aware of the existence of diseases that can be transmitted from animals to people. Rabies was the zoonosis most known by the students (73.6%), followed by cysticercosis (24.5%) and toxoplasmosis (21.9%). Seventy-nine point two percent of dog owners and 69.4% of cat owners had their pets vaccinated against rabies. A total of 46.5% of the participants mentioned to have suffered a dog bite and 75.9% of them indicated that they washed the wound with soap and water. We can conclude that the district of Andahuaylas requires training on responsible pet ownership and about the main zoonotic diseases in the region.
