Monogeneans are parasite that constitute a problem for fish farming in the Amazon, reported in various species. They are generally attached to the gills, injuring these tissues, which serves as an entrance for other secondary pathogens. The red-bellied piranha has economic value as an ornamental fish, as well as for human consumption, so its dual purpose makes its breeding and reproduction in controlled environments profitable. In Peru, the monogeneans present in this species have not been fully determined, therefore these parasites will be identified, associating them with the present histopathological effects. Thirty samples of Pygocentrus nattereri from the province of Maynas, Loreto, were analyzed. The parasitological indices show a frequency of 100% with a total of 13463 monogeneans, a mean intensity and mean abundance of 488.8 parasites/fish. Four genera and 10 species represented by Anacanthorus, Amphithecium, Notozothecium and Enallothecium were identified, Anacanthorus thatcheri being the most frequent species. At the histopathological level, interlamellar hyperplasia, detachment of the lamella epithelium, and fusion of secondary lamellae were mainly found. Myxozoan cysts are reported for the first time in Peru in this species. Therefore, this study shows the potential damage caused by these various monogeneans, which is essential for future crop health management, as well as the importance of this species in maintaining metazoan diversity in the Peruvian Amazon.
