Introduction: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a functional chronic condition. The global prevalence of this disease according to the ROME III and ROME IV criteria is 9.2% and 3.8%. In Peru, the characteristics of patients diagnosed with IBS based on these new criteria are not precisely known. Objective: To describe clinical and epidemiological characteristics of IBS according to the ROME IV criteria in a private clinic in Lima-Peru during 2022. Materials and methods: Observational-analytical study. 196 of 277 participants met the inclusion criteria. A diagnostic questionnaire for IBS ROME IV, demographic and alarm signs was used. Medical records were reviewed to verify the diagnosis established based on clinical criteria. Results: 196 people were interviewed, 74 men (37.76%) and 122 women (62.24%). The mean age was 39.6 years. The frequency of IBS was 22.45%. They were mostly women (77.27%), between the age range of 39-50 years (50.00%), people who study, work or both (90.91%). An association was only found between the diagnosis by ROME IV and sex (p=0.0195). Conclusion: In general, 22.45% of the study participants had a diagnosis of IBS under the ROME IV criteria. These patients were mostly women.
