Background: Due to the current contexto of health emergency due to COVID-19, diabetic patients are exposed to a higher risk of mortality, of becoming seriously ill due to the SARSCOV2 virus and of developing diabetes complications, due to limited access to health services and medicines. Therefore, to prevent or reduce these risks, it is very important that patients with DM type 2 perform efficient selfcare. Objective: To determine the self-care capacity of the patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the health emergency situation against COVID-19. Material and method: Descriptive, cross-sectional research, involving 82 patients with DM type 2 who participate in the Peruvian League for the Fight against Diabetes. The SCALE TO ESTIMATE SELF-CARE CAPACITIES (EECAC) questionnaire was applied, modified Likert type, subdued expert judgment (p<0.05) and pilot test (Crombach´s Alpha=0.936). Results: 68.3% of patients with type 2 DM have a good self-care capacity. In all dimensions, the average level of self-care capacity predominated: in the dimension "Social interaction" (73.2%), in the dimension "personal well-being" (67.1%), in the dimension "activity and rest" (76.8%), in the dimension "food consumption" (51.2%) and in the dimension "promotion of personal functioning and development" (61%). Conclusions: Despite the health emergency situation due to COVID19, 68.3% of patients with DM type 2 have a good capacity for selfcare.
