The health system in Peru has many weaknesses, one of them is the lack of essential medicines in the pharmacies of the establishments that correspond to the Ministry of Health, caused, among other causes, by cumbersome logistical processes that make it difficult to acquire medicines in a timely manner. Consequently, affects the health of users who receive treatment for chronic diseases in Hospitals, Health Centers and Posts nationwide. Objective: To determine the availability of essential medicines for the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus at the Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia, during the period from January 2019 to July 2022. Methodology and materials: It is a non-experimental, descriptive, and cross-sectional study. Data on the consumption and stock of essential medicines used for the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus at the Cayetano Heredia National Hospital were analyzed during the period from January 2019 to July 2022. Results: The monthly availability of the stock level of the essential medicines for the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus used in the Cayetano Heredia National Hospital during the study period, we found in the months of April and May 2020 in a situation of "out of supply" for the patients. five study drugs. In understock thirty-one months for one or four drugs, and only in the months of July and August 2021 did they present a situation of normostock for four drugs under study. On the other hand, three medicines presented a situation of overstock in four months, two medicines in eight months and one medicine in seventeen months in the situation. Conclusions: The availability of essential medicines for the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus in the HNCH during the period from January 2019 to July 2022, presented a low level of availability in twenty-six months, a regular level of availability in xi nine months and a level of availability optimal in seven months of the 42-month study.
