Objectives. To understand the social representations about the experience of getting sick of Quechua origin patients, with diabetes type 2 diagnose from Regional and Antonio Lorena hospitals in Cusco. Methodology: This is a qualitative study based on the principles of interculturality and the interpretive paradigm and using the deep interview. The recordings of the interviews in Quechua were transcribed and translated into Spanish. Subsequently, the interviews were subjected to computer processing and then analyzed according to the dimensions of the study. Results: The social identity of the patients is that they are indigenous-mestizo, in material poverty, mostly female and elderly. In the social representations of patients about the characteristics of diabetes, the predominant influence of modern medicine is present, however, in those corresponding to treatment, the presence of traditional Andean medicine is important as a complement to the modern approach. Conclusion: The social representations about diabetes of Quechua origin patients are a valuable contribution for an intercultural education and health care proposal.
