The Northern Humboldt Current System is highly productive, but unpredictable. Endemic seabirds in this region evolved under changing conditions by exhibiting flexible breeding and feeding strategies. In this study, we investigated how the foraging behavior of Guanay cormorants at Punta San Juan, Perú, changed inter-annually under different oceanographic conditions as well as indices of anchoveta availability. GPS-TDR loggers were placed on 40, 40 and 50 chick rearing birds in January 2017, 2019 and 2020, respectively. During the years 2019 and 2020, the Guanay made longer foraging trips, spent more time at sea, reached more distant areas, more diving bouts and more number of dives per trip than in 2017 (total distance traveled = 75.9 and 82.3 vs 47.7 km, trip duration = 3.7 and 3.9 vs 2.8 h, foraging range = 24.1 and 27.1 vs 16.5 km, number of diving bouts/trip = 4.5 and 3.56 vs. 3, N° dives/trip = 117.13 and 127.1 vs. 72.12). Greater foraging areas were also recorded in years 2019 and 2020 than in 2017 (2,092 and 2,488 vs. 1,133 km²). However, the Guanay dived deeper and longer in years 2017 and 2019 compared to 2020 (maximum dive depth = 12.4 and 11.4 vs. 8 m, dive duration = 29.2 and 26.6 vs. 21 s). In 2017, the 15°C isotherm, was located at a depth of 19.6 m (intermediate between 2019 and 2020), the birds foraged in colder waters (X̅ = 16.8 °C) and presented a high body condition (X̅ = 67 g/cm), compared to 2019 and 2020. While, in 2019, the 15°C isotherm was located at a depth of 25 m, the birds foraged in warmer waters (X̅ = 18.7°C) and presented a low body condition (X̅ = 62.7 g/cm); which was similar to that of 2020 (X̅ = 64.4 g/cm). This study shows that Guanay adjust their feeding behavior according to the oceanographic conditions, making more effort to find food under warm conditions. The higher foraging effort registered during the warmest year is likely related to the fact that under this condition schools of anchovy are more dispersed and at deeper water.
