The objective of the study was to quantify the number of municipalities that used dogs as security elements within the serenazgo program reported to the National Registry of Municipalities within the period 2016 - 2020. For this, an observational, retrospective descriptive study was developed, using the database from the National Registry of Municipalities Survey for the period 2016-2020 developed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI). The results were summarized using descriptive statistics. Among the results, it was found that at the provincial and district level, the number of animals used was higher in the years 2016 and 2017; the highest proportion of municipalities that reported the use of dogs in the serenazgo service corresponded to the Constitutional Province of Callao and the department of Lima.; The largest number of dogs registered for serenazgo use corresponded to the department of Lima, followed by Callao, Piura, La Libertad and Cusco; the highest proportion of municipalities that make up the Lima Centro bloc (includes the provincial municipality of Lima) were those that had more animals as a security element for serenazgo services; the districts grouped in Lima Centro housed more than 50% of the dogs registered in each year of study except for the year 2017; the distribution of the number of dogs used in the serenazgo service in the districts of Metropolitan Lima were reported in at least four of the five years studied. It is expected that the information obtained will serve as a basis for the authorities to increase canine brigade projects in municipalities in Peru, increase citizen security and recognize the importance of veterinary medicine for the development of health plans for these animals.
