Abstract: La resistencia a la insulina es el proceso fisiopatológico más temprano de la diabetes. El desayuno se describe como el primer alimento del día, y diversos estudios sugieren que saltarse el desayuno es perjudicial para el peso corporal y la resistencia a la insulina. No hemos encontrado estudios que hayan evaluado el efecto del tiempo transcurrido entre el despertar hasta el desayuno, que es un periodo diferente al ayuno clásico, sobre la resistencia a la insulina. Objetivo: analizar la relación entre el “tiempo desde el despertar hasta el desayuno” y la resistencia a la insulina en pacientes adultos ambulatorios. Diseño: estudio transversal, descriptivo, correlacional, en 150 adultos mayores de 18 años sin antecedente de diabetes tipo 2, atendidos en una clínica privada en Lima Metropolitana. La variable dependiente fue el índice HOMA-IR, y la variable independiente fue tiempo desde el despertar hasta el desayuno. Resultados: el tiempo desde el despertar hasta el desayuno promedio en los pacientes estudiados fue 118 minutos (Q1-Q3: 90 minutos a 150 minutos). 77.3% de los pacientes estudiados tuvieron valores HOMA-IR fuera del rango considerado normal. Se encontró que existe relación entre el tiempo desde el despertar hasta el desayuno y el HOMA-IR.

Breakfast is described as the frist meal of the day, and various studies suggest that skipping breakfast is detrimental to body weight and insulin resistance. We have not found any studies that have evaluated the effect of the time elapsed between waking up and having breakfast, which is a different period from classical fasting in regards of insulin resistance Objective: Analyze the relationship between the “wake up to breakfast time” and insulin resistance in outpatient adults. Design: cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational study in 150 adults over 18 years of age without a history of type 2 diabetes, treated in a private clinic in Metropolitan Lima. The dependent variable was the HOMA-IR index, the independent variables were time elapsed between waking up and having breakfast. Results: the time elapsed between waking up and having breakfast in the studied patients was 118 minutes (Q1-Q3: 90 minutes to 150 minutes). 77.3% of the patients studied had HOMA-IR values outside the range considered normal.
