The goal of this study was to describe the understandings and practices related to pet ownership among people older than 18 years old, in the district of Bambamarca - Cajamarca, during year 2022. For this purpose, 394 people were surveyed from the distinct sectors of the region, such being; Llaucan (28.2%), San Juan de Lacamaca (20.6%), Chala (16.2%), El Tuco (4.6%), and Bambamarca city (30.5%). According to the results, respondents were predominantly female (54.8%), people who completed secondary school education (20.8%) and individuals with an average age of 39.9 years. Of these, 58.4% owned dogs and 35.5% owned cats. The animal-pet ratio was 4:1 for dogs and 6.7:1 for cats. The study showed that the main purpose for these animals was to be household pets (45.2%) and rodents exterminators (45%), both regarding dogs and cats. Regarding dogs, males predominated (67.9%) while in cats, females predominated (50.5%). In both cases, less than 4% were sterilized. 54.1% of dogs would roam alone and 31.7% were “outdoor” cats. The 50.3% and 69.5% of dog owners and the 45% and 61.5% of cat owners mentioned performing internal and external deworming periodically. Regarding the rabies vaccine, owners reported that 58% of dogs and 12.8% of cats had been vaccinated in the last year. In addition, 95.4% of respondents reported having no knowledge of the word zoonosis. However, 90.4% mentioned knowing about the diseases that can be transmitted by animals. Rabies was the zoonosis recognized by 69.8% of respondents. The laws N° 27596 (Law which regulates the legal regime of dogs) and N° 30407 (Law for the protection and welfare of animals) were recognized by 37% and 84.8% of the respondents, it was also mentioned that the best means for such to be spread and known was through social media.
