More than 615 million people around the world have been infected with SARS CoV-2 (1), hence it is paramount to have biomarkers that identify patients with a greater chance of developing complications. Therefore, this study evaluates the effect of thrombocytopenia on the morbidity and mortality of patients with SARS CoV-2. It was conducted a retrospective cohort study of hospitalized adults with SARS CoV-2 infection with thrombocytopenia and normal platelets. The Chi-square test or the Fisher's test were used for the qualitive variables, whereas the Student's test was used for the quantitative ones. Age and diabetes mellitus were associated with higher mortality in the bivariate analysis (p<0.05). The multivariate analysis concluded that the Odds Ratio (OR) of the events of death and mechanical ventilator requirement increased in patients with thrombocytopenia with OR=3 and OR=2, respectively. Patients with a platelet count higher than 300,000/mm3 had lower mortality in comparison with those with regular counts but less than 300,000/mm3, OR 0.55 p<0.05. In light of the above, there is a higher requirement for a mechanical ventilator and mortality in patients with SARS CoV-2 and thrombocytopenia. Furthermore, a platelet count higher than 300,000/mm3 shows a protective effect on the mortality event.
