Dental caries is a bacterial etiology disease, which consists of the destruction of dental tissues due to the presence of acids produced by oral bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans. Propolis, produced by Apis mellifera (bee), is a component known for its bactericidal action, and up to 200 different identified compounds which are related to the environment. In Peru, propolis has been studied in different regions where there are beekeepers and in the work of Dr. Pablo Millones, he found that the methanolic fraction of propolis from the Oxapampa region, department of Pasco, had excellent antibacterial activity against ATCC bacteria. of Streptococcus gordonii and Fusobacterium nucleatum. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the inhibitory effect of the methanolic fraction of Oxapampa propolis on different genotypes of Streptococcus mutans isolated from children with caries problems. The methanolic fraction of Oxapampa propolis was obtained courtesy of Dr. Pablo Millones Gómez. 150 oral swab samples were collected from children diagnosed with caries, they were seeded and identified by biochemical tests of carbohydrate fermentation, followed by conventional PCR, using specific primers to confirm the species and determine the genotype of each one of them. In each of the tests, Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175 was used as a positive control. After identification, the strains of S. mutans and the ATCC 25175 control were compared to the metabolic fraction by the disk diffusion method in trypticase soy agar, to determine the susceptibility of isolated bacteria and control strain to the metabolic fraction. The data obtained (measurement of the zone of inhibition) were processed using the T-student statistical method. Having as a result the measurement of the zone of inhibition in millimeters against the metabolic fraction (9 to 24 mm) faced with S. mutans showed a greater diameter in relation to those faced with the ATCC 25175 strain (10 to 10.5 mm). In addition, the methanolic fraction responds similarly without significant difference against chlorhexidine p = 0.85, although Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175 and samples from children diagnosed with caries, show significant differences both for chlorhexidine and for the methanolic fraction of propolis p = 0.005. Meanwhile, in the genotyping it was found that 100% belonged to genotype C, 21.58% to genotype E and 14.39% to genotype F and genotype K was not found and among them multiple genotypes C, E were observed with 21.73% and C, F with 14.49%. It is concluded that the methanolic fraction of propolis presents inhibitory activity in the isolated and genotyped strains in 138 children diagnosed with caries.
