Introduction: The work environment of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on hemodialysis was approached, evaluating factors that are related to their occupation status. Objectives: To determine factors related to the occupation status of CKD patients on hemodialysis. Material and Methods: A case-control study was carried out in hemodialysis patients affiliated with the SIS. The cases were defined as patients with the condition of unemployed (unemployed) and the controls as employed patients (with paid employment). Different variables were evaluated to determine their relationship to the occupation condition. Results: There were 188 cases and 89 controls. The factors related to an unfavorable occupation condition were: Functional status ≤ 80 points (OR 34.28), cardiovascular comorbidity (OR 6.32); time on hemodialysis less than 1 year (OR 1.99) and the condition of not having been working previously at the start of hemodialysis (OR 3.58). Conclusions: The evaluation of patients on hemodialysis should include those factors found in the present study, which may be useful to assess work aptitude and help return to work.
