The objective of this investigation was to know the relationship between depression and cognitive functioning in elderly, with patients with depression and cognitive complaints. The dimensions of attention, memory and executive functions were considered as dimensions of cognitive functioning, while the age, academic level and marital status as sociodemographic variables of grouping. A correlational retrospective design study using collection of data from medical records was used with a sample of 220 older adults between 60 and 85 years of age assisted in a Hospital in Metropolitan Lima with a diagnosis of depression and complaints about their cognitive functioning. Psychotic patients, with dementia or organic brain damage were excluded. Depression was evaluated with the Yesavage Depression Geriatric Scale and cognitive functioning with the Neuropsychological Brief Evaluation in Spanish NEUROPSI. A nonparametric correlation coefficient was used for the statistical examination of the data. We found inverse and moderate correlation between depression and cognitive functioning (rs= -.52, p<.001), as well as for its attention dimension (rs= -.50, p<.001), memory (rs= -.50, p<.001) and executive functions (rs= -.40, p<.001). It was concluded that there is inverse correlation statistically significant between depression and functioning in psychiatric elderly patients of a hospital in Metropolitan Lima.
