The present research work seeks to determine the risk of exposure to heavy metals (arsenic, cadmium, copper, lead and zinc) in the populations of children and adults from the localities around the Pacchac and Pucauran streams after the water has been treated or collected within the Pierina mining operation and then discharged into the mentioned streams, during a determined time series: 1996 to 2014, before and after the construction of the mine. The type of study carried out is descriptive, consisting of the communities mentioned around the streams, which used the water from these streams as drinking water. To determine the risk of exposure used the Methodology for the Identification and Evaluation of Health Risks in Contaminated Sites, proposed by Díaz-Barriga (CEPIS) and complemented by that proposed by the Agency for Toxic Substances and the Registry of Diseases (2008). Data were taken from the monitoring of water quality reported to the authority (MINEM). The results showed that the populations of children and adults were already exposed to a high metal load before the start (probably due to the existing environmental liabilities upstream of the mining unit) and during the activities of the Pierina mine, with a high exposure risk from using the water that flows through the streams as drinking water, especially due to the presence of arsenic and lead.
