In the context of the health emergency (March 2020) caused by the spread of the COVID-19 virus and the suspension of outpatient medical care, researchers from the Alexander von Humboldt Institute of Tropical Medicine and other collaborators developed a remote monitoring platform with ChatBot integration and phone calls for the follow-up of outpatients with diagnosed or suspected COVID-19 ("platform"). Implementation in a public hospital in Lima started in May 2020. Objective: Evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of the platform. Methods: Concurrent triangulation mixed methods study. With metrics based on NTP ISO/IEC 9126, the feasibility mainly considered the proportion of patients attended by the platform based on the total number of patients attended in the hospital. For acceptability, 7 of 8 user physicians were interviewed. Results: Between May and December 2020, 8221 (46.5%) of 17664 cases attended in the hospital were eligible for the platform (adults, non-hospitalized, with valid cell phone registration). Monitoring through platform reached 2476 cases: 2409 (90.5%) by physician phone calls (10289 monitoring) and 9.5% by ChatBot (861); entry increased from 20% to 80% by eliminating the need to respond the initial invitation SMS. A total of 63.9% left with a satisfactory clinical outcome. For physician users, learning was simple, the design useful, and they appreciated the opportunity to guide patients from their home and through calls that did not expose their private numbers. Conclusions: In initial phases, the platform was a feasible option for monitoring a subset of COVID-19 patients attended in a public hospital and generated acceptability from physician users mainly with the interface design and perceived usefulness.
