Background: Mobile health (mHealth) interventions have shown potential in identifying and monitoring people with tuberculosis (TB). Objective: Describe the use and long-term retention of TB patients and contacts in mHealth interventions. Methods: We performed a scoping review of mHealth interventions for TB case management. We systematically searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scielo and Lilacs for articles published 2015-2022 and included studies of mHealth interventions lasting ≥3 months. We extracted data on participants’ retention to interventions and items from the mHealth Evidence Reporting and Assessment (mERA) checklist. Results: Out of 383 titles, we included 28 articles. The median number of participants was 102 (IQR 49-282) and follow-up varied from 3-24 months. The overall median proportion of retention was 85.8% (IQR 82.97-97.32) and the ranges varied by duration of the follow up: 32.21.8-100% in 3-6 months (n=10); 48.8-100% in 6-9 months (n=14); 78.1-98.8% in 9-12 months (n=4). Retention to interventions in trials (n=13) ranged between 32.21-100%; 48.8-100% for observational prospective studies (n=11); and 79.4-98.8% for observational retrospective studies (n=2). Retention was 78.1-100% in interventions using video-DOT (n=14), 48.78-97.53% in those using SMS (n=5), 88.46% in those using apps (n=1), and 32.21-100% in those combining several platforms (n=18).
