Introduction: Medical students are a vulnerable group to have poor sleep quality due to the intensity and duration of the studies. Based on the changes generated by virtuality due to the COVID 19 pandemic, it is important to carry out studies to understand the quality of sleep of medical students and how it correlates with academic performance. Objective: To determine the relationship between sleep quality and academic performance of medical students at a private university in Lima 2021. Materials and methods: A correlational level study with a non-experimental cross-sectional design was carried out. A sociodemographic data questionnaire and the Pittsburgh sleep quality index were applied to third and fifth year medical students at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, and the average grades for the 2021 semester were requested. Results: The prevalence of poor sleep quality sleep was 89,22%. The dimension in the Pittsburgh index that generated the highest score was daytime dysfunction (1,98 ± 0,08) and the lowest was the use of sleep medications (0,29 ± 0,08). When correlating poor sleep quality with academic performance, a statistically significant negative correlation (-0,21) was obtained (p=0,03), however the correlation is weak (<0,7). Conclusions: There is evidence of a negative correlation between poor sleep quality and academic performance, that is, the higher the score obtained in the Pittsburgh index, the academic performance decreases.
