Background: One of the most effective ways to prevent obesity is by programming and modifying eating behaviors in the preschool stage, in which the diet depends on the parents. A wrong perception of the nutritional status of the child leads to eating disorders that persist into adulthood. Currently in Peru there are no educational programs that address this issue. Objectives: To determine the agreement between maternal perception and the real nutritional status of their children; and the association between maternal perception, the nutritional status of children aged 6 months to 3 years and sociodemographic characteristics in an urban district of Lima. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional quantitative observational study carried out in establishments in Rimac. 367 children aged were included with their respective mother. Data was collected of the perception of the nutritional status of their children, their age and educational level, and mothers and children were weighed and measured for concordance analysis. Results: 88.19% of mothers with children with risk of being overweight and more than 75% of mothers with overweight and obese children did not identify correctly their nutritional status. A kappa index of 0.0304 between maternal perception and nutritional status of the children was found. Conclusions: There was no agreement between maternal perception and nutritional status of their children. Association was found between maternal perception, the nutritional status of their children and the age of their children.
