The objective of the present investigation is to explore strategies of economic substitution employed by women head of households to replace the contribution of the male partner, after separation. These women have followed a process of reconcilaiton before the "Defensoría del Niño y Adolescente" (DEMUNA) in the district of Independencia, for breach by the male partner, of the nourishment obligation (BNO). The methodology followed was qualitative, through 21 in depth interviews to women, head of households. Almost half of the sample group were head of households and two menbers of the study group had a new couple, in order to solve the economic problems. Seven women live with their parents, but they give a contribution to support familiar necessities. Three sources of income have these women head of households. (1) Contribution given by the BNO conciliation which could either be economic or in species. (2) Women and children income generating activities, through ambulatory commerce. (3) External contributions made by (A) relatives (parents, siblings, new couple), and, (B) members of the community which could either be (i) individuals (network of friends), or, (ii) social organizations (Church, NGOs, "Vaso de Leche," community kitchens). Adaptation to the consequences of separation meant, for these women, prioritizing types of consumption, because the budget managed, only allows them to cover the most urgent necessities. They need to pull together the difference resources to allow them to confront nourishment and education, health is not a priority. The problem of housing is solved by returning to their parents' home. Clothes and recreation of the women and their children is not considered at all.
