Background: Tooth loss negatively affects the self-perception of children, adults and the elderly. There is a dearth of studies based on rural communities, such as those located in Peru. Objective: To determine the association between dental loss and self-perception of health of adult inhabitants of a rural community in Peru during 2018. Methods: Cross-sectional study. The data analyzed were requested from the Academic Department of Social Dentistry of the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH), where the final sample selected was 177 residents of the Fray Martín de Porras Human Settlement who were 18 years of age or older. The main variables were self-perception of health and dental loss, and the covariables evaluated were sex, age group, academic level, relationship status, reason for last dental visit, time since last dental visit and frequency of brushing. The analysis was performed in Stata® v16.0 with 95% confidence and significant difference when the value of p <0.05. Results: From 177 records, a positive association was found between dental loss with poor self-perceived health, where loss greater than 12 teeth had (PR 2.67; 95% CI: 1.8-3.9) greater probability of having poor self-perceived health; but when adjusting the model to the co-variables, the association decreased (PR 1.17; 95% CI: 0.7-1.9). Conclusion: No association was found between the number and prevalence of tooth loss with self-perceived poor health.
