The domestic pigeon (Columba livia) is one of the most frequent birds in urban areas in Lima and Callao, and they are concentrated in various public places such as squares, parks and even monuments, houses and buildings. At present, these animals have become a public health problem, mainly due to their function as a reservoir and transmitter of zoonotic diseases, as well as the spread of diseases to other domestic and wild animals. Therefore, the objective of the study was to describe the perception of the population about the presence of pigeons in public spaces and its significance in public health. For this, the database of the survey "Perceptions about the presence of pigeons in public spaces and their importance in public health" of the Municipality of the Lince district was used. Which included demographic information, perception of the respondents on the factors related to the presence of pigeons, the problems they can cause, the importance as a reservoir of zoonoses, population control measures, human practices in relation to pigeons, and collateral problems of public interest. The results determined that 89.5% of the population recognizes the diseases that pigeons transmit to humans and animals, and the environmental pollution they produce. 76.6% of people prefer municipal sanctions as a control method, 70.9% were unaware that there is currently an Ordinance that regulates pigeon control and, finally, less than 20% perceived that the animal welfare of pigeons is be affected. The contributions made can be considered by the authorities of the Lince district and other districts, so that they can update, modify and incorporate measures and action plans for the control of pigeon populations.
