Delphinidae is the most diverse cetacean clade with 37 species, 16 of them inhabiting the Peruvian sea. They show disparity in the rostral morphology and size. According to molecular data there was an initial diversification in the Miocene, approximately 10 million years ago (Ma) and an explosive radiation at the end of the Pliocene, 2.18 Ma. The adaptive radiation of Delphinidae occurred during temporal intervals of great environmental changes that determined the characteristics of the current Humboldt’s System (HS). However, the morphology and ecology of the SH Delphinidae in the Plio-Pleistocene is still unknown. In this work, an almost complete skull assigned to the Delphinidae clade (MSUM 3906) and collected in rocks of about 2.7 in the area of Sacaco, Arequipa is studied through geometric morphometrics. It was compared with current species of odontocetes to explore their type of diet, feeding strategy and habitat. The analyzes indicate that MUSM 3906 would have presented a piscivorous diet and a raptorial feeding strategy. The closest species to MUSM 3906 in the morphometric space was Sotalia fluviatilis, a Delphininae currently absent from SH and inhabiting the Amazon basin. These results indicate that, although the Pliocene SH already included members of the Delphinidae, MUSM 3906 possibly represents a taxon and an ecomorphology absent in the modern system.
