The aim of the study was to identify the areas in which the veterinarians have participation in the development framework of the healthy municipalities in Peru, based on their education and professional skills. The study was divided in two parts, in the first one a bibliographic search was performed in order to get information about the activities that were carried out in the healthy municipalities and in the strategies that were conducted alongside those ones, from the Latin American and the Caribbean countries; those activities were classified according to categories of work. In the second part, twenty functions were formulated based on the compiled experiences from the first part and supported by the veterinarians’ professional skills. These functions were surveyed by mail; the online survey was addressed to municipalities workers and health and agriculture professionals (from various regions of Peru) in order to validate the performance and intervention of the veterinarians in those functions within the healthy municipalities framework and in the ten initiatives of health promotion in Peru. The results were summarized by descriptive statistics (using relative and absolute frequencies), where the health and agriculture sectors’ acceptance was higher than in the municipal area. Finally, it was concluded that the veterinarian has got the required professional skills to perform and to lead the various activities within the food safety – animal production, public health, animal health and environmental health – biodiversity conservation areas in the development framework of the healthy municipalities strategy in Peru.
